FRIDAY FLASH 03.2.2023

 Fishing

Not a lot going on because of the weather, but one way to make people go fishing is to hold a tournament!  We ended up in the ‘Girls in the Bay’ tournament last week with the tiniest of weather windows and many teams spent at least some of the day, out in the bay.  Maybe next year we should call the tournament ‘Girls on the Blue Water’ and we’ll be able to get out wide? Considering the conditions, there were plenty of fish caught and with a slightly improved weather forecast, we’re looking forward to seeing more fish at the weigh station and the dinner table over the next week or so.

 Girls in the Bay

The Ladies Tournament went ahead last weekend despite the terrible weather.  There were some nice fish caught in the bay including a 2.41kg trevally, 2.28kg kahawai and a very respectable 7.24kg snapper.  The focus however, was on the party at prizegiving and the organisers really did deliver.  We had excellent feedback all around and the ladies partied hard until the DJ had to stop at midnight.  Thanks and well done to Tanya Patrick and Anne Smal (convenors), Melissa Ford (helper and radio operator) and the small army of people helping out in the days leading up to the tournament.  We had 254 anglers entered on 90 boats and such a great result proves what can be achieved with a positive attitude in less than ideal circumstances.

Working Bee

We’re having another short working bee on Saturday (4th) starting at 8.00am.  We just want to put the covers back on the marquees out the back so if we can get a few people here it shouldn’t take too long at all.  We had a fantastic turnout at the last request a couple of weeks ago with 18 members pitching in to give us a hand.  Thanks to all concerned and hopefully we’ll see most of you again on Saturday.

Kayak Training

The Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers are doing a 4-day training session from Feb 9th – 12th.  Based at Hahei there will be hundreds of kayaks on the water between 9.00am – 4pm each day.  Please be aware of additional sea and radio traffic, although they will be on channel 61.

Surtees Boat Tournament

Once again we are hosting the Surtees Tournament which will take place next week with briefing and prizegiving in the Blue Lagoon.  We expect the club to be especially busy on Thurs 10th and Saturday 12th Feb.  Please bear with us as we do our best to ensure these people have a great time – staff will be stretched and it is likely there will be no parking available at the rear of the club on these two nights.

Open Tournament & Nationals

The MBGFC Open is our next tournament and once again, runs in conjunction with the Nationals.  New convenor Grant Wadsworth – ably assisted by John Booker – has been busy organising sponsors and prizes and is getting some excellent results.  Our main sponsors to date are Whitianga Marine Yamaha, Raymarine, CRC, Okuma and Volva Penta and Grant is putting together an outstanding prize package.  Entry forms are available now on our website or from the clubrooms.
