MBGFC OPEN

We held the prizegiving for this tournament n Saturday which went very well, especially for the winners.  The overall champion angler for both light tackle and in the open section was Jeremy Waterer from team Mercy – well done guys.  There were plenty of other good catches during the tournament, but a few worth mentioning for pins and records are:

Melissa Ford – a pending NZ Ladies record, Club record and Pin for her 6.53kg mahimahi on 6kg line, Chloe Roberts – a ladies club record for her 60.22kg yellowfin tuna on 15kg line, Louise Wilson – ladies club record for her 3.29kg snapper on 3kg line, and pins for all the following fish:

James Cutfield 240.8kg broadbill on 60kg line, Shane McBarron 142.8kg broadbill on 60kg, Lee Johnston 226.4kg blue marlin on 37kg, Melissa Ford (again) 12.95kg Kingfish on 10kg line, Michael Nicholson 1.57kg kahawai on 1kg line and Jeremy Waterer 2.18kg skipjack tuna on 1kg line.
A very successful tournament in different ways for many people.  Thank you to all the sponsors, the anglers and the Convenors Grant Wadworth and John Booker who did a great job in some very difficult circumstances.

NATIONALS:
The club did exceptionally well in the Nationals again this year – so much so that we’ve had to put out an extra newsletter to cover it – and even then we couldn’t fit in everyone’s achievements.  For a more comprehensive list of winners and place-getters, visit our website or the NZSFC site, or click here.

We’ll mention a couple of teams, since their achievements are so spectacular – Team Mercy, Jeremy Waterer and Markus Wunderlich, won the CD Rods Team Trophy which is for the team with the most points from the top scoring fish of each species.  The other one is Mad Max who set out to tag as many marlin as possible and for the second year in a row, won the John Hough Memorial Trophy against some good competition.  The team was made up of Thomas Maxwell, Johan Smal, Evan Tebbutt and Tony Croft who along the way tagged 11 marlin himself to take out sections 4 and 6 for striped marlin.  Unfortunately we omitted Tony’s achievement in winning section 4 – NZ Champion Angler when we sent yesterday’s email. Not quite sure how – he only beat the next person by 5 marlin!!

Well done to everyone else too, whom we simply don’t have space to name here.

CATHEDRAL COVE SCENIC CRUISES NO BAIT TOURNAMENT:

We’re expecting ideal conditions for this tournament this weekend so get your entries in before the bar closes on Friday night.  It’s only $25 per angler to enter and there’s an optional boat sweepstake.  All the entry fees will be returned in prizes as well as an extra $1000 cash donated by the main sponsor – Cathedral Cove Scenic Cruises – and there are lots of spot prizes too.

KUBOTA BILLFISH CLASSIC:

This has turned into a massive tournament which is taking place from 16th March to 18th March inclusive.  It really has put us on the map (if we weren’t already!) with boats and anglers coming from all over the country from Houhora to Invercargill.  At briefing (Wed 15th) and prizegiving (Sat 18th) we may have over 1000 people on our premises.  There’s a lot of prize money at stake so you can expect a bit of buzz around town that week.  We’re working through the logistics now and will advise in due course whether there will be any changes to our normal club operations during the week this tournament is on.
