Some Interesting Statistics On
EPIRBS And PLB’s
In conjunction with Longshore Marine and Hutchwilco,
we recently hosted a safety at sea evening highlighting what safety equipment
recreational mariners should have on their boats/watercraft.
From this exercise Stu Brown from Longshore Marine
obtained some statistics from RCCNZ (Rescue Coordination Centre NZ) on
PLB/EPRIB activations in and around our waters.
Activations by Year
· 2021
PLB: 578 EPIRB: 253
· 2022
PLB: 618 EPIRB: 264
· 2021
PLB: 700 EPIRB: 293
ü 99%
of all activations are received by RCCNZ within 2 minuets
ü Average
time for tasking by RCCNZ on activation is 10 minuets
ü Of
all activations, 25% are false alarms –
45% result in rescue/recovery.
Conclusion:
ü Every
vessel should have a PLB/EPIRB on board.
ü Register
your PLB/EPIRB so if it accidentally activated the rescue services can contact
you to clear the activation quickly.
