Fishing Report
Offshore
With the terrible weather recently, not many have ventured offshore. One exception was Crofty weighing a nice Shortbill Spearfish recently while fishing aboard “Seahorse”. The water temp and colour is reportedly still good out wide so there should still be a few fish around if the weather plays ball. Also have had reports of some nice Puka and Bass being caught in the deep, and not too far from home either.
Inshore
The Youth Nationals are in full swing for the school holidays, and once again the weather is not helping. In saying that there have been some great catches from our young members when they have managed to get out. Snapper, Kingfish, Trevally and Kahawai have all come across the scales since the comp started.
While the biggest fish usually win the prizes, it is not always about that. We weighed a Kahawai last week weighing just .32kg for a young fella. It was his first ever Kahawai and the smile on his face was huge. You would have thought he had weighed a Marlin. Well done!.
Good Fishing…
Hunting & Fishing Junior Tournament and Youth Nationals
With the weather conditions not playing ball recently, we haven’t seen many fish over the weigh station since Easter Weekend, although we have had d a few land base Kahawai and Snapper weighed the last couple of days. There is a weather window on today and I hear that a few boats are heading out. Good luck to them all the young anglers, stay safe and we hope to see some fish weighed and to see where the leader board ends up on Saturday night’s prizegiving.
The Team at Hunting & Fishing Whitianga are looking forward to prizegiving on Saturday at 6pm, you must be there to receive any drawn prizes including the last junior standing draw. A gate prize worth $10,000
Good luck and see you on Saturday night.
Good luck to all our young anglers who also competing against other NZSFC affiliated Clubs in the Youth Nationals.

Fisheries Amendment Bill – Very Important
The Fisheries Amendment Bill has passed its first reading. It is now open for public submissions.
This stage matters. What is decided here will shape how fisheries are managed and what is available to recreational fishers in the future.
Thousands of submissions have already been received. Your voice still needs to be part of that.
Several proposed changes in the Bill have immediate relevance for our members, including the removal of the commercial minimum legal sizes for finfish despite promises to have this section deleted.
Other amendments within the Bill include:
- Allowing the capture and sale of undersized fish
- Reduced penalties for deepwater vessels when they exceed catch limits for inshore species such as kingfish and gurnard
- Restrictions on access to onboard camera footage
- A $50,000 fine for anyone who releases camera footage
- Limiting the timeframe and ability for the public to challenge fisheries decisions
You have a direct opportunity to influence the outcome. Ten minutes is enough to make a submission.
Use the LegaSea submission form to build your response. Then copy and paste it into the official Parliament submission page.
