Fishing Report

Offshore

No reports recently of anyone venturing out wide. The SSTs show there is still warm water out there so hopefully someone can afford the fuel to go and have a go.

Inshore

Snapper, Snapper, Snapper. Lots of great reports of Snapper being caught in good numbers, and good size. The reef edges are working well as is out on the sand. Burley always helps if your stray lining, but beware of the Sharks that are also there at the moment.

Congratulations to all the kids who competed in the Hunting and Fishing Junior competition. The prize giving on Saturday was a great event with lots of happy kids winning great prizes. A huge thanks to Hunting and Fishing Whitianga for the magnificent support, we have received so much positive feedback. Please support these guys, as well as the many other sponsors who make our tournaments possible.

Good Fishing…

The Stunned Mullet Top Ten Snapper Tournament

Lock in the dates for The Stunned Mullet Top Ten Snapper Tournament, 30th & 31st May (Kings Birthday Weekend).  It’s always a fun tournament catching that elusive heaviest snapper.  Not only prizes for top ten snapper there is also prizes for the heaviest snapper junior angler boy (U18) and junior angler girl (U18) and a lady.  Entries are open, click here for entry form and rules

Ladies Blue Tournament

We’re on the countdown to the end of the Ladies Blue Tournament next Thursday.

Thanks to sponsors of the tournament Stoney Creek, Besafe Safety Supplies and Landmark Homes. We have 16 lady anglers entered, with a nice yellowfin tuna weighed and a couple of broadbill tagged and released to date.  If you are in the comp it’s still not too late and with the nice long weekend ahead to see if you can chase down these fish and be in for a share of the cash prize money and to claim the prestigious trophies.  Prizegiving will be announced in due course once a date has been determined.

Fisheries Amendment Bill – Last Chance

To ‘Oppose the Fisheries Amendment Bill’ before it becomes law.  If passed, it will reshape how our fisheries are managed for generations, and not in a good way.

It is vital that we get as many people to opposing the Bill because overwhelming public opposition is the only thing that will stop this Bill at the Select Committee stage.

If you’ve been meaning to do it, now’s the time. Take a few minutes and make your submission before the deadline Wednesday 29th April.

Hunting & Fishing Junior Tournament

What a fantastic competition!  Thanks to the team at Hunting & Fishing Whitianga, Alex, Ash and Cody. Their passion and generosity shone through by the way the junior anglers had a ball at prizegiving.  This is inspiring for our youth and we’re incredibly grateful for their support.

The weather didn’t play ball at times, but the junior anglers got out there and gave it their best shot. Well done to all the anglers that participated in the tournament, there was some great fish through the weigh station.

With what is fast becoming a reoccurring theme, our small-frys are in contention with our juniors across all species sections…we have some unbelievable up-and-coming anglers within our club across all age groups and it’s SO good to see!

Congratulations to Lachie Pedersen, winning the Ocean Sport Marine Junior Snapper trophy for the 2026 season with his 7.94kg fish!

A special mention to angler Levi Nicholson, setting the new MBGFC Junior Kingfish record on 8kg with his 14.02kg fish landed at the start of the comp…and then BEATING it a few days later with a 15.92kg Kingfish!

A huge congratulations to all our prize winners, and a special congratulations to our lucky gate prize winner Hunter Nicholson, taking home a massive $10,000 worth of gear thanks to our epic tournament sponsors Hunting & Fishing Whitianga! What a prize.
